Lois and Lathan – As Good As Gold

Lois and Lathan have a wonderful relationship and as mother and son they seem to exude happiness. They appear carefree, always laughing and teasing even when it’s blowing a gale or pouring rain they are always having a great time at their market shop. Life hasn’t always been easy for them though. This is Lo’s story…..

“My name is Lois Holloway but my friends call me Lo. Although my family lived in Southport, my Mum was rushed to Brisbane’s Royal Women’s Hospital, when it came time to give birth to me. As a small child we lived in Southport where I attended the local primary school. My four brothers and sister also attended the Southport Primary School. When my parents divorced, Mum and we kids moved around the Coast, living in most suburbs from Runaway Bay down to Coolangatta.

I attended six different primary schools and four high schools and loved being the new kid on the block. It wasn’t that hard as I always had a sibling there for support and found that I could make friends easily. Like most people of my generation, I couldn’t wait to leave school and start work.

My first job was with Regent Taxi’s , answering the phone and taking the bookings. From there I was promoted to 2-way radio calling the jobs to the taxi drivers. I managed to get my two best friends jobs there as well and we all loved working there. After two years the novelty wore off and I started looking around for something else. That’s when a career in Hospitality started. I absolutely loved the work in cafes, restaurant, catering, hotels, and resorts. You name it I worked it, not only on the Gold Coast but all around Australia.

I never cared for marriage or settling down in one job or place. I guess my upbringing had a lot to do with that. I had been engaged twice over the years but managed to evade the walk down the aisle. I had just turned 40 years old when I met the man I was about to marry and spend the rest of my life with. Michael was truly a wonderful person who was much loved by all that met him. Together we built a beautiful life and had our adored son Lathan. Being a first time Mum at 42 years of age was a huge shock for the foot loose and fancy free girl that I thought I was. But I just loved being a stay at home Mum and devoted wife to my Husband.

Michael had an idea for a business that became a reality in a very short time. We started a fibreglass boat repair business and over 10 years built the business up to be a huge success. I was so proud of my Husband as he had many skills and was a very hard worker. We had a wonderful life together and loved each other very much. Sadly my Darling passed away from cancer in 2010.

I really don’t remember what I did the first two years after that. I know that I was totally focused on my son and his wellbeing. It was the only thing that got me through those dark days. I then just had to get out of the house so a friend suggested that I do volunteer work at a Day Respite Centre for the Elderly. The love and support I received from those old folk helped to heal my heart. From there I completed a Certificate 3 in Aged care and started work as an AIN at a privately run facility.

A Nurse who worked there had a jewellery business which she wanted to sell. She had a badly injured shoulder and was unable to carry on with it anymore. So that is how I became a market stall holder. Everything in my life was meant to be………………………………………..”
